- UIM Character Editor - Read Me File
-
- -----===================================-----
-
- This Utility will help you get around the Oceans in UIM from The Fourth
- Dimension by allowing you to define your own Submariner Character.
-
- How it works is like this: UIM "Checksums" any Saved Character
- File and if it does not match what it thinks it should, then the Computer
- locks up! This is to prevent your attempting to cheat and obtain a UIM
- certificate. However it is possible to get around this by altering the
- Default character stored in "$.!UIM.BROGAN" as this is not checked (not yet
- anyway)! This Utility is not to help you cheat, but to give you a chance
- to survive and hopefully get more enjoyment from the game.
-
- For your own safety I do recommend that you at least make a backup
- copy of BROGAN on a seperate Disk so that if anything goes totally
- wrong you can at least restore the default settings. However, I have
- run the UIM_HACK Utility many times now to check all the various
- options that the program alters without any damage to the Game or
- Disk. I have even duplicated BROGAN as BROGAN2 in the !UIM Directory
- and have safely used this as the unaltered Default loaded in while the
- amended data is re-saved as BROGAN. Also, I've even stored the
- UIM_HACK on the Game Disk! However, if you do this, you do it at your
- own risk, I accept no responibility for loss of data or ruining your
- game disk!
-
- HOW TO USE THE EDITOR
-
- ------=====================------
-
-
- Version 1.00 - From BASIC - CHAIN "HACKER"
- - From Desktop - Double Click on Hacker Program Icon
-
- Version 1.01 - From Desktop - Double Click on !UIM_HACK Application Icon
-
- Once loaded, you are presented with two screens of text, please read
- them, they are there for your protection as much as anything! Once
- you are happy with the safety of your UIM Game Disk, press Space Bar
- to move on to the actual Loading and Defining of your Character. You
- can choose how many Network Credits you start with, how many
- Torpedoes, Chaff, Sea Mines you have, maximum of FOUR otherwise the
- screen display is corrupted. You may also choose which Network you
- start on. You may also pick just how destructive you want to be.
- This ranges from the Default Ion pop-gun up to the most destructive
- Generator. One word of warning here, the more powerful gun you have,
- the more you seem to be attacked. Or at least that's what I've found
- so far!
-
- The next options you can select from are all the other items, like
- modules, the Central computer, Deflectors, Air Lock and so on. With
- these, there are several which are "Colour Coded". Currently these
- are either Yellow or Green. The Yellow are the Weight Restrictive as
- detailed in the UIM Manual. Only four of these items can be carried
- at once. The program will not allow you to select more than four, or
- three if you selected the Phasors from the Arms section as this is
- also one of those weight items.
-
- Once you have selected all that you want, the program will save BROGAN
- to the disk and run the Game. As for the "Extra Equipment" which it
- briefly mentions, this is the part of UIM which you have to work for
- yourself by succeeding with the Mission Modules! After all, you want
- a little more challenge that simply being splatted by the various
- nasties floating around in the oceans don't you?
-
-
- My thanks to STWPD for the Clue which gave me the first insight into UIM
- and how to get around the Checksumming. The writing of the Hack Utility is
- however all my own work.

- THE HISTORY OF !UIM_HACK UTILITY
- -----================================-----
-
- March 1990 - Obtained my A3000 Computer System
-
- 20 April 1990 - Written Version 1.00 of UIM_HACK which did the job, just.
- Nothing fancy, but it worked.
-
- 28 April 1990 - Amended Version 1.00 to Version 1.01 to work from Desktop
- - and added early version of Double Height Routine.
-
- 30 April 1990 - Written Textfile (that's this) to try to clear up any
- - problems which may be encountered.
-
- As for what the future holds, hopefully as time permits, I'll be able
- to make it more WIMP compatible, better Double Height Routines,
- perhaps even optional modes and so on.
